Digital Detox Club are a start-up based in Bath, on a mission to support families and individuals in
battling phone screen addiction and reconnect with the real world. The Pointer team recently supported Digital Detox Club with establishing their strategic purpose, objectives and two-year roadmap.
With a new co-founder on board and resources evolving, Digital Detox Club wanted to build a plan that would sustain progress and stay true to their purpose.
For this project, Ben, Devanshi and Lucy facilitated a series of strategy workshops with co-founders Laura Jane Hughes and Nicola MacDonald, that were tailored for their early stage of development.
Our Approach:
To prepare for imminent resourcing changes while continuing to move the business forward, Laura and Nicola wanted to develop a two-year roadmap. To ensure it was genuinely useful, the roadmap needed to be grounded in a clear articulation of Digital Detox Club’s purpose, vision, mission and values, alongside a well-defined core offering.
The 3-step process that we followed is described below:
1. Aligning Purpose, Vision, Mission & Values
The first workshop focused on why Digital Detox Club exists, where they want to be in the future, and how they will achieve this. Through a series of exercises, Laura and Nicola began to compose their purpose, vision, mission, and value statements, which are important foundations for the success of a business. These would act as a guideline for the remaining workshops, as well as future decision-making within the business.
2. Defining their Product & Market
As an early-stage start-up, defining who they are and what they offer is vital for building an aligned roadmap. Pointer designed and facilitated a process that helped Digital Detox Club clarify their core offering, develop a stronger understanding of the market, and define their unique selling point (USP). The work involved several structured exercises, including SWOT and the Bird-in-Hand principle, to explore Digital Detox Club’s unique context within their market and identify which customer groups their strengths are best suited to engage. As a small organisation with limited resources, harnessing their strengths will help Digital Detox Club maintain strategic focus and prioritise the most impactful levers for success.
Roadmapping is the process of breaking down the actions needed to achieve strategic goals. To get to the level of detail required for a meaningful roadmap, Pointer guided Digital Detox Club through setting strategic aims, continually connecting back to the vision statement they had established earlier in the project.
From there, a set of supporting objectives was determined, acting as a checklist for tracking progress and prioritising what mattered most. These were then plotted across a two-year timeline, creating a practical plan for Laura and Nicola to follow.
To make this process more engaging, the Devanshi and Lucy used post-it notes and whiteboarding alongside collaborative facilitation exercises. These encouraged both detail-oriented thinking and long-term perspectives, ensuring the roadmap was practical, shared, and achievable.
Outcome
Digital Detox Club came away from the workshops with a clear vision and shared set of ambitions for the future. They established data collection processes to track progress against objectives and identify the right moments to prioritise marketing activity.
With a defined Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values, alongside a detailed strategic roadmap, Nicola and Laura felt confident about the actions needed to move forward and make those
ambitions a reality.
“[Pointer] were so helpful. They asked questions we hadn't thought of and dug deep to help us arrive at answers and move forward with planning. They brought knowledge and experience to help us to shape the vision, mission, and objectives in a way that didn't feel daunting, just valuable and clear.”
