The start of April marks my first month working at Pointer Consultancy Group Ltd. Working for a small change management consultancy as a recent university graduate has been an enriching experience, that has allowed me to widen my skill set.
Having completed a masters degree in Social and Organisational Psychology at the University of Exeter, I hope to utilise my knowledge of social psychological practices to inform change management practices and sustainability services such as; understanding the resistance to change, group dynamics and organisational culture.
Here are some of my reflections and experiences so far on working for a small consultancy firm after graduating from university:
Variety
I have been involved in a wide range of tasks from researching, marketing, involvement in writing bids, press release writing and attending networking events, which has been great exposure to different areas of the business.
Autonomy/Responsibility
Being part of a smaller team means that I have more autonomy and responsibility compared to a recent graduate in a larger consulting firm. It has been really motivating and rewarding to be involved in decision making processes, especially at such an early stage in my career, as well as contributing to shaping and developing the business.
Training
Being surrounded by highly experienced colleagues and absorbing knowledge through conversations and during meetings, means that there is lots of opportunity for informal training on the job. Alongside this, there have been formal training opportunities as I am also starting a training course to gain a qualification in project management. It has been great to have been offered more formal training in such a quick turnaround to me joining, and I’m excited to put what I learn from the course into practice.
Familiarity
Working within a small firm means that there are frequent interactions between the team, and we work closely in a collaborative environment, which was been great for getting to know my colleagues and the organisation as a whole.
Overall, the past month has been amazing, I am grateful to the whole of the Pointer team for your guidance and support, and I am excited about the future and the possibilities that lie ahead.
