In March 2023, Emma joined the team as a Consultant in her first role after completing her MSc in Social and Organisational Psychology at Exeter University. We asked her a few questions so you can to get to know Emma and learn about her valuable contributions to the team:
What have your previous roles and experiences been?
My previous roles and experiences have focussed on the social side of sustainability. Previously I have worked in two academic research roles. One was at the Centre of Social Mobility, I was involved in a project in the higher educationcontext that explored the intersectionality between gender and social class that influences academic outcomes. The secondard position was at the EvidenceBased Justice Lab, I took an interdisciplinary approach to apply behavioural anddata science to the legal system. I investigated the biases and disparities within thecriminal justice system, including racial and ethnic disparities in sentencingand the impact of socioeconomic factors on legal outcomes.
I also completed an internship at AtkinsRealis, where I led a project investigating thefactors facilitating or hindering women's advancement into senior positions. I conducted one-to-one interviews with employees and analysed qualitative data to produce a written report that included recommendations for positive organisational change. These experiences confirmed wanting to pursue a role that was people focussed, but also within social sustainability and creating a positive impact.
What is your approach to consulting?
Enthusiasm, Collaboration and Proactivity.
What is your biggest achievement since joining Pointer?
Crafting multiple social value responses within a complex bid management project stands
as my proudest achievement. Despite encountering limited internal capacity and support, as a team we developed action plans and metrics to showcase their dedication to fostering equal opportunities and combating climate change.
I not only addressed the client’s needs, but also aligned with broader societal objectives
and local community needs. Consequently, my efforts contributed towards the successful acquisition of the contract, marking a significant milestone in our journey toward supporting our clients in making impactful change.
How have you made a positive impact while working at Pointer?
One key achievement that demonstrates my dedication to positive impact has been the
development and implementation of a sustainable travel policy through Climate Perks. By advocating for flight-free travel options and providing additional leave for employees who opt for eco-friendly transportation, we demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.
Additionally, I've been involved in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our team by
championing and implementing the T-Cup solution. Through this initiative, team members have been empowered to reflect on lifestyle factors that influence their wellbeing. By fostering a culture that prioritises mental health and provides resources for self-reflection and support, we've created a more open and supportive culture.
What do you like to do outside of work?
When I'm not working, I love spending time outdoors. I enjoy surfing and chilling at the beach or going for a coastal hike. I also play netball and like the teamwork and competitive side of sport. To relax, I enjoy watercolour painting –particularly painting coastal scenes.
What personal sustainability choices do you make?
My personal sustainability mission is centred on buying second-handclothes to reduce my environmental impact. By opting for pre-loved clothes, I contribute to minimising the strain on our planet's finite resources and mitigating the harmful effects of fast fashion.
