The 27th June marked Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day, a United Nations
initiative established to raise awareness of the vital role MSMEs play in sustainable development and the global economy.
In the UK, SMEs make up 99.85% of all private sector businesses. They employ around 60% of theprivate sector workforce and generate more than half of all private sector turnover (source).
At Pointer, this is a day that resonates strongly with us. As a business founded and built by entrepreneurs, we've experienced first-hand both the opportunities and challenges that come with growing a small business. We're proud that the work we deliver helps other organisations create jobs, generate income, and contribute to stronger local economies.
To mark MSME Day, we asked our directors to share one of the most valuable lessons they've learned
while building Pointer and some of the realities they've encountered along the way.
Charles' Lesson: Don't Build Alone
"Having had the privilege of speaking with amassive variety of start-ups, micro-businesses, scale-ups and SMEs since starting Pointer, one of the biggest recurring lessons I have learnt is that
doing it all on your own can be tough.
Having a business partner to bounce ideas off, have a good day when you're having a bad day, have a bad day when you're having a good day, keep things in perspective and share the load really makes a difference."
For many business owners, entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey. Decisions, risks and responsibilities often sit squarely on the shoulders of a small number of people. Whether it's a co-founder, trusted adviser, mentor, employee or external partner, having people around you who challenge your thinking, provide support and offer perspective can make all the difference.
Richard's Lesson: Proportionality
"It is important that MSMEs recognise that theyaren't large businesses and are proportionate in their approach to growth.
'Perfect is the enemy of good' is a good starting point, MSMEs need to understand what is good enough at each stage of development and not strive to me more than that where it doesn't add value or fit their budget."
As businesses grow, it's easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to larger, more established organisations. Focusing on what delivers value today, rather than striving for perfection, allows businesses to remain agile, efficient and focused.
Celebrating the Businesses That Keep Economies Moving
MSME Day is ultimately about recognising the millions of business owners, founders and teams who show up every day to solve problems, serve customers and create opportunities for others.
These businesses maybe small in size, but their collective impact is enormous.
At Pointer, we're grateful to work alongside ambitious founders and business leaders who are
building the future of their industries. Their resilience, creativity and determination continue to inspire us.
